After completing the club’s Learn to Row course, many students want to continue developing their rowing skills and join the development squad. The main aim of this squad is to develop each individual at the pace they are happy with to enable them to join one of the main squads of their choice.

Andy Rewcastle - Head Development Coach

Andy has extensive experience of coaching. After learning to row at Shiplake College in 2008, he qualified as a rowing coach and became Head of Rowing at Chichester University Rowing Club, where he coached the Women’s squad to gold at the English Indoor Championships. Since then, he has coached at Reading Rowing Club, where he coached a crew to the quarter final round of the Development 4+ category at Henley Women’s Regatta 2023 before moving to becoming Head of Women’s Rowing at Southampton Univeristy Boat Club. Achievements within this role include the Novice women achieving A and B finals at BUCS regatta, with the Senior Women’s 1VIII making the C Final of the Acadmeic VIIIs - an incredibly competitive category. He has since returned to Reading to take up the role of Head Development Coach, supporting the progression of rowers with their journey at the club along with promoting a healthy and enthusisastic environment in which to row.
